Whither Peace?

The World Affairs Council of Harrisburg featured a panel of distinguished scholars to explores issues of war and peace in the modern world and present the 2017 “Peacemaker in Our Midst” Awards to local leaders.

 

  • Opening Speaker: Abdulhamit Bilici   — Former Editor of Zaman Daily – Turkey’s Descent in Despotism  


Hundreds of journalists, judges, teachers and just plain people are in prison in Turkey for opposing what is increasingly a despotic regime.  Abdulhamit Bilici, a prominent Turkish journalist now in exile in the U.S., says Turkey’s instability threatens world peace.

He is the founder and president of the National Iranian American Council and an expert on US-Iranian relations, Iranian foreign politics, and the geopolitics of the Middle East. ​His latest book – Losing an Enemy: Obama, Iran and the Triumph of Diplomacy (Yale University Press, 2017) – reveals the behind the scenes story to the historic nuclear deal with Iran.

 

Closing  Speaker: Yewande Austin — Honorary U.S. Cultural Ambassador – Threats to the World’s Children
Yewande Austin, Honorary U.S. Cultural Ambassador, is founder of the Global Institute for Diversity and Change, and is focused on ending the scourge of human trafficking and violence against children. She is working in Africa to find safe havens for victims of Boko Haram and is dedicated to preventing children in the U.S. and abroad from becoming the tragic victims of human trafficking.
